Investigation into the nature of γ-irradiated paramagnetic centres of p-nitrostyrene crystalline oxide

  • 1. AN Ukrainskoj SSR, Kiev. Inst. Fizicheskoj Khimii

Description

At the temperature of liquid nitrogen in a γ-irradiated monocrystal of p-nitrostyrene oxide (O-p-NS) detected are the nitrogen-centred σ-radical identified as NO2 in the complex with the molecule of the basic substance, formyl radical and non-identified paramagnetic centres. Samples have been irradiated by the γ-rays of 60Co with the doses of 5-30 Mrad at the temperature of liquid nitrogen. The annealing of O-p-NS monocrystals irradiated by γ-rays results in irreversible change of ESR low-temperature spectrum. Presented are the characteristics of electronic structure of nitrogen-centered free radicals, the formation of which may be supposed to be in the result of direct action of ionizing radiation on O-p-NS molecule or in result of further transformations of radiolysis products
