Description
Surface-graphite stripes formed on the terraces of the stepped Ni(771) surface were investigated by high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy. We show that the phonon spectra of these stripes, measured in both directions parallel and perpendicular to the steps, are characterized by typical graphite-derived phonon modes with pronounced dispersion. In particular, the phonon spectra in the direction perpendicular to the steps show some additional features, which can be related to the folded Brillouin zone connected to the translational period of the Ni(771) terraces
