Corrosion of MTR type fuel plates containing U3O8-Al cermet cores

Description

The fuel plate samples containing U3O8-Al cermet cores with concentrations from 10 to 90% of U3O8 weight were fabricated. Samples with 58% of U3O8 eight were fabricated using compacts with densities from 75 to 95% of theoretical density. The influences of U3O8 concentration and porosity of compacted core on porosity and uniformity of core thickness are discussed. The U3O8-Al cores were submitted to corrosion tests and exposed to deionized water at temperatures of 30, 50, 70 and 900C by cladding deffect produced artificially. The results shown that core corrosion is accompanied by hydrogen release. The total volum of released hydrogen and the time interval to observe the initiation of hydrogen releasing (incubation time) are depending on core pososity and absolute temperature. A mechanism for U3O8-Al core corrosion process is proposed and discussed. The cladding of fuel plate samples was submitted to corrosion tests under similar conditons of the IAE-R1 reactor operating at 2, 5 and 10 MW. (Author)

Abstract (Portuguese)

Foram fabricadas amostras de placas combustiveis contendo nucleos de ceramica metal de U3O8-Al, com concentracoes de 10 a 90% do peso em U3O8. Amostras com 58% de peso em U3O8 foram fabricadas usando-se compactados com densidades de 75 a 95% da densidade teorica. Discutem-se as influencias da concentracao de U3O8 e da porosidade do nucleo compacatado sobre a porosidade e uniformidade da espessura do nucleo. Os nucleos de U3O8-Al foram submetidos a ensaios de corrosao e expostos em agua deionizada as temperaturas de 30, 50, 70 e 900C, atraves de um defeito no revestimento produzido artificialmente. Os resultados mostram que a corrosao dos nucleos e acompanhada pela liberacao de hidrogenio. O volume de hidrogenio liberado e o tempo transcorrido ate que seja observado o inicio da liberacao de hidrogenio (tempo e incubacao) sao dependentes da porosidade do nucleo e da temperatura absoluta. Propoem-se e discute-se em mecanismo para o processo de corrosao dos nucleos de U3O8-Al o revestimento das amostras de placas combustiveis foi submetido a ensaios de corrosao sob condicoes similares as do reator IEA-R1 operando as potencias de 2, 5 e 10MW.
