Electrochemical study of uranium in the sodium fluoroborate. Sodium fluoride eutectic at 4200C
Description
The study of molten sodium fluoroborate properties is divided into two parts. First the preparation of the solvent is reported. To reduce the oxygen content of NaBF4 to a minimum, the salt is recrystallized in dilute hydrofluoric solution (0.5 to 1.5 M). The final product contains 500 ppm oxygen. The electrochemical study of uranium in the NaBF4-NaF eutectic led to the conclusion that U(VI) and U(IV) make up a single electrochemical system. Given the forms in which U(VI) (UO2F42-) and U(IV) (UF62-) exist, the oxidation-reduction process involves the oxygenated species present in the molten salt. The kinetics of this process depends on the nature of the electrode used

L'etude des proprietes du fluoroborate de sodium fondu comporte essentiellement deux parties. Tout d'abord nous avons fait porter nos efforts sur la preparation du solvant; en vue de reduire au maximum la teneur en oxygene dans NaBF4, nous avons choisi de recristalliser ce sel en milieu fluorhydrique dilue (0,5 a 1,5 M.). Le produit final obtenu contient 500 ppm d'oxygene. L'etude electrochimique de l'uranium dans l'eutectique NaBF4-NaF fondu nous a conduit a conclure que U(VI) et U(IV) constituent un systeme electrochimique unique. Compte tenu des formes d'existence de U(VI) (UO2F42-) et de (U(IV)(UF62-), le procesus d'oxydo-reduction met en jeu les especes oxygenees presentes dans le sel fondu.
