Description
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) sponsored consortium Decommissioning, Immobilisation and Storage Solutions for Nuclear Waste Inventories (DISTINCTIVE) is contributing to the development of skilled cross-disciplinary scientists and engineers with the knowledge and experience required to develop engineering solutions tailored for application within radiologically contaminated sites. Of the four themes addressed by the DISTINCTIVE consortium, the AGR (Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactor), Magnox and Exotic Spent Fuels theme considers the UK's diverse spent nuclear fuel inventory and the preferred options for disposal; this includes the retrieval of fuel from current storage facilities and the repackaging options available. Specifically, the research is concerned with AGR, Magnox and so-called 'Exotic' spent fuels; the goal being to increase knowledge and mechanistic understanding of the processes affecting long-term management and mitigation of any potential risks.
