Steam in RR Telescopii and Henize 2-38

  • 1. Anglo-Australian Observatory, Epping (Australia)

Description

Low-resolution scans in the 1.9-2.6μm atmospheric window reveal steam (H2O) and CO adsorption bands in the spectra of the symbiotic stars RR Tel and He 2-38. The steam absorption in RR Tel is particularly intense while the CO is weak, implying the presence in the system of a Mira variable seen near minimum light. In He 2-38 the steam band is weaker while the CO is stronger, as expected for a Mira seen near maximum. (author)
