Description

This paper reports on anhydrous meodymium trichloride (NdCl3), containing ∼1 weight percent neodymium oxychloride (NdOCl), that was prepared by the dehydration of neodymium trichloride hexahydrate (NdCl3 · 6H2O). Dehydration of the hexahydrate was conducted in three steps. First, the hexahydrate was slowly heated in air to about 250 degrees C until all the low temperature water of crystallization was removed. In the second step, the neodymium hydroxychloride (Nd(OH)2Cl) formed in the first step was decomposed by heating under argon to 430 degrees C. Finally, the salt was ground and then treated with HCl gas at 330 degrees C until practically all of the NdOCl was converted to NdCl3
