Recovery of plutonium from contaminated hydraulic oils of hydraulic diaphragm pumps

  • 1. Fuel Reprocessing Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

In spent fuel reprocessing facilities, hydraulic diaphragm pumps (Pulsa Feeder Pumps) are used for transfer of high active liquids in controlled rate. In view of the continuous use, diaphragm of the pumps gets ruptured at few occasions, and the Hydraulic Oil (HO) in the pump thus gets contaminated with radio nuclides. The contaminated hydraulic oils need to be decontaminated before they are sent for further management as waste. Extensive studies were carried out to develop a method for decontamination of the contaminated HO. Initially the distribution ratio (D) for Pu, U and FPs were established in fresh HO using TBP
