Nuclear demagnetization
Description
The method of adiabatic demagnetization to obtain ultralow temperatures is surveyed. The use of Van Vleck paramagnets is discussed, PrCu6 being taken as an example. Attention is paid to magnetic moments induced by a hyperfine field, yielding considerably larger values than the nuclear magnetic moment itself. Consequently, the demagnetization of the Van Vleck paramagnets is analysed. A helium dilution refrigerator is used in pre-cooling
