Role of Calcium Pantothenate in Recovery of Radiation Induced Injury to Mammalian Organs

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the modulator role of calcium pantotthenate on the radiation-induced changes in certain biochemical and histological disorders. Rats were exposed to a total dose of 6Gy of gamma-radiation, delivered as three doses of 2 Gy at 3 days intervals. During two days before each irradiation dose, animals received a daily intraperitoneal administration of 20 mg calcium pantothenate/kg b wt. Animals were sacrificed on the 1st h, 1st week and 2nd week after the third irradiation session. Blood and livers were removed for biochemical analysis. Histological examination was performed on liver tissues. The results obtained revealed that treatment with calcium pantothenate diminished the amount of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) in comparison with the levels recorded in the plasma and liver of irradiated rats. Significant amelioration of the radiation-induced changes in the contents of reduced (GSH), total cholestererol, total phospholipids and total free fatty acids were also recorded in the plasma and liver of calcium pantothenate-treated and irradiated rats
