Brillouin scattering from rare-gas crystals: A theory for the Pockels coefficients

Creators

Description

First, a short introduction is given to Brillouin-scattering experiments and to the phenomenological theory of Brillouin scattering. The microscopic equations are formulated and the macroscopic variables are discussed. In a separate chapter the effective field is derived. In Section 5 the constitutive relation of a dielectric crystal in the presence of time-dependent strains is established, assuming the constituent atoms interact only via the retarded dipole-dipole coupling. Finally, the Pockels coefficients are derived, and in Section 6 effective polarizabilities are introduced. (KBE)
