Assessment of the activity fixation in industrial alpha sources

Description
Data are presented from studies on the defixation of 238Pu and 239Pu out of the enamel matrix of plane sources during storage at room temperature as well as during their application as static eliminators or in radioisotope instruments. The activities were in the range from 0.3 to 28 mCi/cm2. To meet the requirements of radiation protection concerning the possible contamination as a consequence of the gradual defixation, the rate of defixation must not exceed the value of 10-4 μCicm-2month-1 for plane sources as static eliminators, and 10-3 μCicm-2month-1 for use in radioisotope instruments, respectively.
