Nuclear industry is accountable for 3% of the transport of radioactive materials

770.000 transport operations of radioactive materials were carried out in France in 2011. This figure can be broken down as follows: technical checks (65%), health sector (26%), non-nuclear industry (4%), nuclear industry (3%) and non-nuclear research (3%). Included in the list of technical checks, the control of the presence of lead in paintings required about 430.000 displacements of lead detectors. The figure of the health sector represents mainly the delivery of radiopharmaceutical products to hospitals. Concerning the nuclear industry sector, about 19.000 shipments were carried out including 2000 operations from or towards foreign countries, 320 shipments of fresh fuels, and 220 shipments of spent fuels towards La Hague plant.
