Protective arrangement for a radioactive radiation source arranged in the walling of a permanent casting mould

Radioactive Isotopes are very suitable for level measurement in continous casting moulds. However due to radiation risk to the personnel these radiation sources must be drawn back into a shielded resting position during the casting pauses. It is suggested to construct the radiation source (60CO) as float and to lift it by buoyancy or flouring of a fluid medium through a channel in the mould walling - whose axis is parallel to the mould axis - up to a stop at the height of the metal bath level to be measured. The channel is advantageously open at one side and is connected to a shielding container to take up the radiation source in the casting pauses. (UWI)
