Study of 24Mg(d(pol),p)25Mg with polarized deuterons

  • 1. Wisconsin Univ., Madison (USA)

Description

Angular distributions of the vector analyzing power and the absolute cross section were measured for 24Mg(d(pol),p)25Mg at nine energies between 10 and 12 MeV and energy averaged angular distributions were obtained. Excitation functions of the cross section from about 8 to 13 MeV were measured for the first five excited states in 25Mg at three backward scattering angles thetasub(lab) = 1050, 1380 and 1600. A statistical analysis of the observed fluctuations was employed to separate the direct and the compound nuclear contribution. These results allowed the absolute normalization of Hauser-Feshbach calculations and a quantitative estimate of compound nuclear effects on cross section and vector analyzing power. The energy averaged angular distributions of the first four stripping states in the residual nucleus are compared with DWBA calculations. The transition to 7/2+ state at Esub(x) = 1.61 MeV is found to proceed almost entirely by a compound nuclear mechanism. Spins J, parities π and spectroscopic factors C2Ssub(lj) of six higher excited states were determined. (Auth.)
