Description
The biosynthesis of ribosomal RNA precursors (pre-rRNA) and their transformation into mature forms of rRNA in rat thymus were studied normally and after total-body exposure in a dosage of 400 rad. It was established that radiation induces phase changes in the rate of rRNA biosynthesis followed by inhibition of the process at times preceeding mass death of thymocytes. However, no selective degradation of nuclear rRNA precursors is observed. Discussed are presumable mechanisms of changes in the biosynthesis and processing of rRNA in thymus cells of exposed rats
