Outline of the estimation of nuclear-related costs required in 1989
Description
The report outlines the planned policies for 1989 and the estimation of costs for them. The planned activities include the overall strengthening of safety measures, the promotion of safety research (engineering, environmental radiation, radioactive waste), the strengthening of disaster prevention measures and radiation protection measures, and the assuring of environmental safety and safety of radioactive material transportation. Nuclear power generation should be promoted and the nuclear fuel cycle should be established (securing of uranium resources and enriched uranium, reprocessing of spent fuel, utilization of recovered uranium, disposal of radioactive waste). Efforts should be made at the development of fast breeder reactors and utilization of plutonium. Other projects should also be implemented for research in nuclear fusion, promotion of radiation utilization, high-temperature engineering). In addition, active and positive activities should be conducted for international cooperation. Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation, National Institute of Radiological Sciences, national test and research agencies, and Institute of Physical and Chemical Research require costs of about 104.3 billion yen, 228.8 billion yen, 9.9 billion yen, 2.1 billion yen, and 3.6 billion yen, respectively.
