A new source of isotopes for nuclear medicine

Creators

Description

A new method (called Mini-Shine) for producing 99Tc (via 99Mo) is being tested. Neutrons will be produced by the linear accelerator of the Argonne Laboratory and they will be sent to irradiate an aqueous solution of low-enriched uranium. Some uranium nuclei will undergo fission and in about 6% of fissions 99Mo nuclei will be produced. This method is being validated and is expected to take over the conventional method based on neutrons from nuclear reactors.
