Interaction of hydroxyl radicals with monomethylcellulose in radiolysis of its aqueous solutions in the presence of Cu(II) ions

Description

The principles of the radiation chemical conversions of the monomethyl ester of cellulose (MMC) in the presence of Cu(II) ions were studied. The yield of destruction of monomethylcellulose decreases with increasing Cu(II) concentration, which is associated to a substantial degree with competition of the reactions of OH radicals with MMC molecules and Cu(II) ions. A mechanism is proposed for the radiolysis of MMC, on the basis of which it was shown by the method of steady-state concentrations that the values of the effective rate constant of the interaction of the OH radical increase with increasing molecular weight of the cellulose ester
