Death of a reprocessing plant

Wakersdorf, in Bavaria, until May the construction site for a huge reprocessing plant, is being redeveloped so that instead of nuclear fuel reprocessing, solar cells, amongst other things, will be produced there. The reasons are partly financial as the construction costs were escalating, partly technical but also because of the continuing anti-Wakersdorf campaign. Instead, West Germany will send its spent nuclear fuel to be reprocessed in France or at Sellafield in Britain. This has given rise to increased protests about the reprocessing activities at Sellafield. (author)
