Role of multistep collision processes in increasing the beam stopping cross section for high energy neutral beams

Description
We have found that multistep processes involving excited atomic states can substantially increase the stopping cross section for a neutral hydrogen beam injected into a plasma. For the very large energies envisioned for negative ion based systems, the enhancement can be as large as a factor of two
