Combined treatment of cancer of the head and neck

Description

The use of the combined treatment of the malignant tumors of the head and neck is analysed. The sequential and organized spread of these lesions, specially regarding the occurrence of micrometastases, is discussed in detail, therefore justifying the use of both chemotherapy and radiotherapy in association with the surgical procedures. Special attention is given to the study of the squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. The experience of the Department of Head and Neck Surgery of the Hospital das Clinicas of the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil) Medical School with these combined procedures (from March 1981 to April 1984) is presented. The epidemiology, the histological findings, the main location and the different types of combined therapeutic approach are discussed. (M.A.C.)
