Bonding metal to ceramic like materials

Description

This patent describes the attachment of an external metal to an oxide ceramic through the use of an intermediate metal oxide layer. The improvement described here comprises imparting to the intermediate metal oxide layer the combined properties of formation of an oxygen-metal bond to the ceramic and an ionic diffusion type bond with the external metal by providing in the intermediate metal oxide layer a metal from the group of Fe, Mn, Ti and the 33 Ni 67 V combination, providing as the oxide ceramic at least one member of the group of glasses, quartz, SiO/sub 2/, Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and combinations thereof and providing as the external metal at least one member of the group of Cu, Ni, Fe, Ti, Mo and alloys thereof
