Postirradiation amylasemia in man
Description
The activity of amylase in the blood serum and urine of humans and animals after irradiation was investigated. During the first 24 hours after irradiation of a human being there was found a sharp increase of the level of amylase in the blood and urine. The minimum dose of irradiation causing marked hyperamylasemia was 150-200 rad. With doses of 200-300 rad the level of amylase in the blood exceeded the norm by 5-10 times, with doses of 500 rad and higher - by 20-30 times. Radiation hyperamylasemia was revealed also in single and fractionated irradiation of patients having been subjected to radiotherapy and also in irradiation of rats with a dose of 700 R. Hyperamylasemia was mainly caused by irradiation of the salivary glands
