Description
Previous surveys of phosphate ore mined in the United States have shown significant concentrations of uranium and thorium. The processing of this ore to produce phosphoric acid, the integral feed material in phosphatic fertilizer production, leads to the formation of large quantities of gypsum as a byproduct, frequently called phosphogypsum. This paper discusses the Environmental Protection Agency's assessment of the radiological impact of utilization of gypsum
