A gamma-irradiation unit for biological objects

  • 1. Bylgarska Akademiya na Naukite, Sofia. Inst. za Yadrena Izsledvaniya i Yadrena Energetika

Description

An experimental gamma-irradiation unit for biological objects is designed together with a complete technical documentation. The irradiation source is 60Co with a total initial activity of 7890Ci. The dose rate in this case in the irradiation chamber centre is of 350 R/min. The feeding system for the objects to be irradiated, the distribution of the irradiators in the chamber, and the location of the radioactive sources ensure a high degree of irradiation homogeneity for a large bulk material, while keeping the dimensions of the unit relatively small. Possibilities for realizing various irradiation models are created. Biological protection is achieved with a combination of heavy concrete and lead. An original solution of the problem of charging and recharging the sources, which guarantees a reliable radiation protection and safety is carried out
