Specific heat of EuB6

  • 1. Tohoku Univ., Sendai (Japan). Dept. of Physics

Description

The specific heat of EuB6 has been measured over the temperature range 1.8 to 77 K. A broad anomaly, which is not substantially of the lambda-type, was observed for both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic samples. Up to 13 K, the anomaly involves about 90% of the entropy expected for divalent Eu. However, the maximum of the specific heat occurs well below their magnetic transition temperature directly obtained by magnetic measurements, while the shape of the anomaly differs between the two samples. The results suggest that there exist two possible mechanisms responsible for the anomalous properties of this compound. (author)
