Radiation protection principles to be applied in measurements for decontrol of metal scrap from the decommissioning of uranium mining plant and equipment. Recommendation passed at the 104th meeting of the SSK, June 27/28, 1991

The decommissioning of the sites and installations of uranium mining operated so far by the Wismut AG, will produce large quantities of contaminated metal scrap destined for recycling in a steel smelting plant. The SSK recommends a maximum permissible radioactivity level of 0.5 Bq/cm2 for decontrol (in accordance with Annex IX, column 4 of the radiation protection ordinance for natural uranium), after chemical and mechanical decontamination. The scrap is to be fractured under radiologically safe conditions prior to decontrol into pieces of a size ready for acceptance by the smelting plant. (HP)
