Response of a tungsten-scintillator ionization spectrometer to hadrons with primary energies in the range 5-300 GeV

Description
Results obtained from exposure of the apparatus to 5, 10, and 15 GeV/c pions as well as to 100, 200, and 300 GeV/c protons are presented. They include cascade development curves, fractions of the primary energy measured by the spectrometer, and resolutions of the apparatus for measuring the primary energies. The responses of spectrometers having depths smaller than the total depth of approximately 1,000 g/cm2 were estimated. The energy resolution ranges from 28% at 5 GeV/c to 8% at 300 GeV/c for the full depth of 1,000 g/cm2. For a depth of 500 g/cm2 the resolution is degraded to 29% at 5 GeV/c and to 21% at 300 GeV/c. Ergebnisse aus der Bestrahlung des Geraetes mit 5,10 und 15 GeV/c Pionen und 100, 200 und 300 GeV/c Protonen werden dargestellt. Sie schliessen Kaskadenentwicklungskurven, Teile der vom Spektrometer gemessenen Primaerenergie, Aufloesevermoegen des Geraetes bei Messung der Primaerenergien ein. Die Ansprechempfindlichkeiten von Spektrometern mit Absorberdicken, die geringer als die totale Dicke von etwa 1.000 g/cm2 sind, wurden geschaetzt. Das Energieaufloesevermoegen reicht von 28% bei 5 GeV/c bis 8% bei 300 GeV/c fuer die Gesamtdicke von 1.000 g/cm2. Fuer eine Dicke von 500 g/cm2 ist es gesunken auf 29% bei 5 GeV/c und auf 21% bei 300 GeV/c. (orig./WB)Additional details
