Improving oil spill observations with a personal digital assistant

Description
A global positioning system (GPS) microcomputer device was developed to help an oil spill response team in taking accurate and detailed notes regarding the extent of the contamination. The unit is a small, hand-held personal digital assistant (PDA) linked to a GPS. With this instrument, it is possible to record information about the location, distribution, and appearance of spilled oil. Data is stored into files which can be easily retrieved when needed by many geographic information systems and overlaid onto digitized maps. Preliminary tests of the system have shown that it is reliable and easy to operate. 2 refs., 2 figs
