Atomic and molecular photophysics using short-wavelength free-electron laser (FEL). Multiphoton ionization and deexcitation of rare gas clusters using extreme ultraviolet FEL light

Description
The cluster where several atoms to several tens of thousands of atoms aggregate shows the behaviors greatly different from isolated atoms in the interaction with high-intensity free-electron laser (FEL) beams. This paper introduces the main findings obtained from the authors' cluster experiments at the SPring-8 Compact SASE Source test accelerator. In the cluster where constituent atoms are aggregated at almost the same atomic density as the bulk, the following can be inferred from the experiment: Multi-photon absorption occurs easily, and in addition, interesting state has been realized such as the generation of nanoplasma due to the interaction between a number of generated electrons and ions. This paper mainly discusses the process of ionization of the cluster through irradiation of the extreme ultraviolet FEL and the behaviors of the generated charge. (A.O.)

数個から数万個程度の原子が凝集したクラスターは,高強度自由電子レーザーとの相互作用で孤立原子と大きく異なる振る舞いが見られる.本稿では我々のグループで行ってきた,SPring-8 Compact SASE Source試験加速器でのクラスター実験から得られた主な知見を紹介する.バルクとほぼ同じ原子数密度で構成原子が凝集しているクラスターでは,多光子吸収が容易に起こることに加えて,生成した多数の電子・イオンが相互作用することでナノプラズマの生成をはじめとした興味深い状態が実現されていることが実験から示唆されている.ここでは主に,極紫外自由電子レーザー照射によってクラスターがイオン化する過程と,生成した電荷の振る舞いについて議論する.(著者)Additional details
