Development of a formula for calculating zirconium hydride fuel swelling
Description
A model is developed to describe irradiation induced growth in zirconium hydride or for heavy ion accelerator irradiation of structural materials. The model is based on the phenomenon of volume saturation occurring as a result of annealing of irradiation produced dislocations. The model was proposed by Hudson, Mazey and Nelson for swelling in Ni irradiated with C++ ions. The model predicts a strong temperature and weak flux sensitivity. A sensitivity is shown to lower temperature, higher power operation following an initial steady operation. (U.S.)
