H I mapping of galaxies in the cluster A1367

Description
The VLA was used to synthesize the emission in the 21-cm line of H I from galaxies in a single field in the northwest of the cluster A1367. The observations were carried out in two sessions, with the C-array for 8 h and the D-array for 4 h. The spectrometer provided 31 channels of spectral data spaced by 86.3 km/sec centered on velocity cz = 6850 km/sec (heliocentric). The VLA observations were supplemented by a study of the Palomar Sky Survey plates with the Astroscan plate scanner at the Sterrewacht Leiden. The VLA H I maps confirm that the atomic gas in these galaxies is displaced from their optical centers, and that the gas is distributed asymmetrically as suggested by their single-dish spectra. This is taken as evidence for interaction between the cluster medium and the galaxy gas disks. It is proposed that these galaxies are entering the dense medium of the clustor core for the first time. 27 refs
