Es werden die historische Entwicklung und der gegenwaertige Stand der Forschung und Entwicklung auf dem Sektor solcher unkonventionellen Energie-Direktwandler dargestellt, die eine gewisse technische Reife erreicht bzw. sogar eine praktische Anwendung gefunden haben. Neben ihren Funktionsprinzipien werden die thermodynamischen, elektrischen und werkstoffwissenschaftlichen Grundlagen, die technische Realisierung, die Wirtschaftlichkeit, die besonderen Probleme und die Zukunftschancen abgehandelt.
