Application of microware energy compression to particle accelerators

Description

The possibility of application of the microwave energy compression method for the increase of the charged particles energy is discussed. The main concept of the method is as follows: a resonator accumulating energy in TE-mode is connected with an interference switch in the form of a T-like branching in the H-plane. A standing wave is created due to the reflection from the short-circuit in ohe of the T-branching arms in the storing regime. Plasma is produced to transfer the stored energy, and the latter is directed into the load. One of the ways of solving the multimode resonator problem is suggested which is based on the experiences of operation with a completely opened output holes and the slot spherical resonators. The main aspects of a very high-power plasma switch, operating at a low gas pressure are discussed. The switch consists of a standard waveguide 122 cm long with the interference switch at one end, the other end beings connected with a clystron through a diaphragm. The power gain is 23, the maximum output power is 160 MW
