Description

Mapping analysis of vertebrate fossils in Permian silicified peat was carried out using microscopic energy dispersive fluorescent X-ray analysis (EDX) instrument. The table type fluorescent X-ray analyzer has advantages that low tube voltage and current of the X-ray tube greatly minimize surface discoloration of samples including organic ones caused by X-ray irradiation, and can be easily handled in a laboratory. During a horizontal distribution mapping of a Permian silicified peat sample, particular area showing high phosphorus and calcium coexistence, which could represent a possible bone structure, was detected. The presence of a vertebrate bone fragment was confirmed by light microscopy observation of the fossil sections. This is the first report of the finding of a vertebrate bone in fossil silicified peat using the EDX instrument. (author)
