Carryover of volatile iodine species in some Swedish and American BWRs

  • 1. Statens Vattenfallsverk, Vaellingby (Sweden)
  • 2. Central Electricity Research Labs., Leatherhead (UK)

Description

Semiquantitative arguments are presented concerning the thermodynamic properties of aqueous iodine species and their likely reaction rates. These are used to rationalize the very high carryover of iodine which occurred occasionally during the winter of 1980/81 at the Swedish BWR Ringhals-1 and to relate the occurrences to other observations at the plant. The behaviour is compared with that at other Swedish and American BWRs on the same basis. The relevance of the findings to the assessment of PWR faults is also considered. (author)
