Effect of hyperfine interaction on radiative transitions and the polarizability of the hydrogen atom

  • 1. Research Laboratory of Electronics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139

Description

The tensor polarizability of the hydrogen atom ground state and also the np1/sub //2 state, which arises due to hyperfine interaction, has been calculated. The effect of hyperfine interaction on the (2p1/sub //2)--(1s1/sub //2) transition probability, used to measure Lamb shift in the hydrogen atom, has been studied. This effect turns out to be negligibly small
