The role of the Independent Inspection Agency

  • 1. Independent Inspection Agency (United Kingdom)

Description

This paper gives a description of the involvement of Lloyd's Register with the nuclear power industry, showing the role played as it has developed over the years, culminating in that of the Independent Inspection Agency (IIA) for Sizewell 'B', with particular attention given to the reactor pressure vessel (RPV). Lloyd's Register Industrial Division (LRID) has undertaken design assessment and examination of primary circuits and reactor pressure vessels of nuclear power plants since the early 1950s. The IIA contract for the Sizewell 'B' RPV was awarded to LRID in 1982 following the submission of tender for precommissioning, design appraisal, inspection and test services and subsequently the contract has been extended to include the manufacture and installation on site of most of the safety classified equipment whose design incorporates the requirements of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Section III, Division 1.
