Cosmic ray muon physics done at Kiel

  • 1. Kiel, Neue Universitaet, Kiel, West Germany

Description

Results of measurements of sea level cosmic ray muon energy spectra at Kiel are presented and their physical and astrophysical implications are discussed. Measurements of the muon flux at the normalization point which resulted in the correction of the point to which muon spectra are normalized and the determination of the momentum at which crossing over in relative intensities occurs between near-horizontal and vertical spectra to be 170 GeV/c are presented, together with the ACD standard integral and differential muon spectra obtained. The Kiel-DESY air-gap magnetic spectrometer and electromagnetic interaction calorimeter are described, and spectra, charge ratio measurements, electromagnetic interaction probabilities, a pion-kaon production spectrum, primary cosmic ray mass compositions and cosmic-ray anisotropies determined by the spectrometer are discussed. The development of the DEIS solid magnet spectrometer is also outlined
