MAFF responsibilities and procedures and coordination with local authorities
Description
After describing the routine responsibilities of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF), with respect to radioactive contamination, the role of MAFF in emergency situations is described. The prime objective is to protect the population from radioactively contaminated food. This involves field monitoring programmes and diet studies. Examples are given of the response by MAFF to the Chernobyl incident and the administrative lessons learnt are listed. (U.K.)
