Decommissioning of nuclear power plants

Creators

Description

The general aspects of the decommissioning of power reactors are discussed. The three stages of decommissioning, stage 1 (protective storage, or mothballing), stage 2 (entombment) and stage 3 (complete dismantling, or green-field) are each briefly discussed, and practical experience referred to. The amounts and types of waste and their disposal is also touched upon. It is estimated that decommissioning costs will be about 10 percent of the original construction costs. (JIW)
