Description

The energy shell correction usually introduced in the traditional shell correction method is expressed in terms of quantities defined by the finite part of the single-particle spectrum. The dependence of the shell correction on the formal parameters of the theory is investigated and the best set of parameters is obtained. The numerical accuracy of the new prescription is high enough to calculate the deformation energy with realistic finite depth potentials. The relation between two types of N-averaging used for extracting the smooth component of the energy is established. (orig.)
