Radioactivity profile during the first fuel clad failure in FBTR

Description

Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) has been in operation for about 25 years without any fuel clad failure and the fuel has reached maximum burn up of 165 GWd/t. Two different systems: (i) delayed neutron detection (DND) in primary sodium (ii) fission gas detection in reactor cover gas are used for the detection of the fuel clad failure in FBTR. On February 3rd, when reactor was operating at 18 MWt, it underwent automatic shutdown on DND west loop signals. The clad rupture detection monitor in cover gas also showed large increase in activity within short time. Reactor cover gas and exhaust samples confirmed the presence of large amount of Fission Product Noble Gases (FPNGs) along with 41Ar.
