Description

The 'Compact Muon Solenoid' (CMS) is one of the two multipurpose detectors to study proton-proton interactions at a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV at the 'Large Hadron Collider' (LHC) of CERN. LHC is a super conducting collider to be installed inside the LEP tunnel. It is designed to reach an energy of 7 TeV per proton beam and a peak luminosity of 1034 cm-2 s-1. It will also provide heavy (Pb) ion collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of more than 1000 TeV and a luminosity in excess of 1027 cm-2 s-1. The CMS detector is designed to exploit the full physics potential at this new facility. The backbone of the detector is a long (about 14 m) superconducting solenoid of large radius (about 3 m) generating a strong magnetic field of 4 T. The main detector components are a redundant muon system complemented with an excellent electromagnetic calorimeter and a high quality central tracker. Hadron calorimetry is achieved inside the coil. Some prototype results of the detector are presented. (author)
