Growth of inclined disturbances of a flat current layer

Description

Hydromagnetic instability of a flat current layer of a collisional plasma in the external homogeneous magnetic field which is collinear to the current is investigated. Increments of inclined disturbances for the family of initial states with different magnetic fields at the ''moderate'' magnetic Reynold numbers are determined subject to the factors of shear, inhomogeneities, convection, isotropic ion viscosity, and conducting walls. Eigen function calculations make it possible to find the regions of disturbance localization. An important role of the inclined disturbances is established, the latter may posess far larger increments in certain cases. ''Intermediate'' non-potential instability is observed in going from tearing instability to the potential convective one. Sharp growth of disturbance increments is detected, when a critical point approximates to the plasma boundary. The increments decrease, when the critical point exceeds the bounds of a plasma, and further on follow the simple analytical dependence, determined idrectly from the equations of the linear instability theory. Ion viscosity affects stabilizing at comparatively low temperature
