Qualification testing of I and C equipment for nuclear application

  • 1. Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd., Pune (India)

Description

The instrumentation and control systems of a nuclear power plant are the 'eyes and ears' of the plant operator. The availability of NPP is of great concern owing to the higher capital costs incurred. Highly reliable redundant safety systems are required to ensure safe shutdown whenever necessary to prevent damage to equipment or personnel. Defence in depth approach is key to safety and this approach is the feature of Indian NPP I and C systems. Quality assurance planning and quality control are of greater importance in safety life cycle of I and C system important to safety. QA Programme of Indian NPP ensures functional performance of I and C system and its ability to survive expected environmental condition. This is known as qualification. This paper describes the details of qualification methods adopted for Indian NPP Instrumentation and Control Systems. (author)
