Nuclear structure studies with fast neutrons

Description

A 14 MeV neutron scattering facility has been developed at PINSTECH. The absolute detection efficiency of a locally fabricated liquid scintillation detector using NE213 has been measured in the neutron energy range 2 to 11 MeV. The double differential inelastic scattering cross sections of 14.8 MeV neutrons by deuterons have been measured using time-of-flight technique. Evidence for new excitations at 8.8, 8.9, 10.2, 12.44 and 12.52 MeV has been obtained. Also time-of-flight spectra of 14.6 MeV neutrons scattered by iron have been measured. It is found that these are consistent with a 1+ spin parity for the triplet. The observed structure in the emitted neutron spectra of aluminum and lead has discussed in terms of nuclear structure. The system gave improvement of the energy resolution from 9% to 5% at 20 Mev gamma ray energy. (orig./A.B.)
