Description

Results are presented of testing an HPGe γ-spectrometer on a planetary soil model with different types of pulsed neutron generators. All measurements have been done at an experimental nuclear planetary science stand designed at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research for physical calibrations of active gamma and neutron spectrometers. The main task is to model a space experiment on the evaluation of the elemental composition of Martian planetary matter with neutron-induced gamma spectroscopy. Advantages and imperfections are analyzed of using a gas-filled neutron generator compared with a vacuum tube neutron generator.
