Balancing the Uranium Production Cycle: Central Asia as a Case Study

  • 1. Uranium Mining and Remediation Exchange Group (UMREG) (Country Unknown)
  • 2. International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna (Austria)

Description

This paper examines the lessons learned from studies of the status of uranium mining and milling legacy sites in the countries of Central Asia. A review is given of the condition of the sites, of the potential risks associated with them and of the remediation needs. Drawing on experience from around the world, guidance is given on how to avoid some of the problems of the legacy sites when entering into new uranium production programmes. (author)
